sketches of my world

for everyone
The images compiled here all came about mostly through journeys with Emil Davocol, Bien Bautista, Rudy De Leon, Amang Jose, and the late Waldy Cruz. All true friends, unified in our passion for preserving the beauty of our country.

I am what I am now, through them. Masters all.

My tribute to the person who taught me the essential parts of my visualization.

Manual color posterization is a technique first taught to me in 1989 by Emil Davocol. Painstakingly meticulous, it would usually take an average of 8-12 hours to complete a single image. The process, although pretty straitforward, required producing multiple pairs of line exposures on Kodalith representing tonal gradations stretching from highlights to shadows, in both positive and negative form. The digital version, although way way faster, somehow captures just barely half of the flavour of the analog process. As it is only Emil who has ever produced successful posterizations in the Philippines, should you wish to see a sample of the original style, just follow this link. www.emildavocol.com

Photographed on a sunny & hot thursday noon originally as a lens benchmark test for 2 newly acquired 50mm Leitz Wetzlar Summicrons, this image is easily a visual favorite for today's generation. Incidentally, although the 1954 50mm collapsible summicron was both portable and sharp, I tended to favour this image taken by the 50mm dual range summicron which I found to be substantially sharper. Both lenses are now in the possession of two avid Leica collectors.
